Sea of Bees wrapped up a memorable 5 show run in New York City last week. We loved the Ft. Greene neighborhood where we stayed (thanks Allen!), drank frozen margaritas in McCarren Park, visited the MET, walked Central Park, hung out with amazingly talented people, played shows with two of our favorite songwriters David Dondero and Matt Bauer, navigated our way around the subway and sweated our asses off in that New York summer humidity. Total tour success!

Also the super rad folks at Impose premiered the “Marmalade” video. Big thanks! Speaking of videos, we did a full day of video shooting for the next single, “Wizbot”, while in New York with the team at Mindset NY. What a phenomenal experience. Look for that premiering at the end of August. Also other exciting news is that Sea of Bees is featured on itunes this month, included in the Indie Spotlight Podcast. We have more exciting news to report very soon. in the meanwhile, pick up the record “Songs For the Ravens“, go to a show, say hello.

“Songs for the Ravens is bound to be one of this year’s finest records; as soon as you hear it you’re not going to be able to shake it.” Portland Mercury

“Sea Of Bees encapsulate an otherworldly mood in their debut album, an interesting and unguarded blend of occasional dark corners and quirky escapism – the latter of which best depicts what music is about, after all.” Wears The Trousers

“I want you to know how much I appreciate “Marmalade,” a fuzz-rumbling number from Sacramento’s Julie Ann Bee (aka Sea of Bees) that’s equal parts Polly Jean Harvey and the Kris Special and, above all, fresher than fresh.” Duluth News Tribune

“Bee Eee Pee’ was so beloved because of its low production and high emotion factor and those qualities have only been expanded on for Songs for the Ravens. The record projects itself as a hybrid of tunes all tied together via the lazy warmness of Baenziger’s voice.” For Folk’s Sake

“Songs For the Ravens is full-on, with an arsenal of glockenspiel, slide, marimba and keys. But you might not even notice all that when you hear her vocal register, which lies somewhere between that of Björk and Leigh Nash … I know, too good to be true, and it is truly gorgeous.” The Days of Lore

“The new album highlights Baenziger’s ethereal, emotive vocals, yearning lyrics and buoyant musical sensibility that turns even sadness into an embrace.” The Sacramento Bee

“I’m not entirely sure why I love this album so much. Sure, there are great arrangements, plenty of nice harmonies, a good blend of acoustic and electric guitars, organs, drums, and electronic flourishes, lush moments, driving moments, and delicate moments. Sure there are sincere lyrics sung with just the right balance of sweetness, confidence, and vulnerability. All assembled into very enjoyable concise songs. Or perhaps it’s the underdog element that seems to accompany myself and many other musician/artists hailing from California’s Central Valley.

These are the things I can put my finger on. That which I cannot put my finger on, is the mysterious, wonderful, and addictive qualities of this album as a whole. Bravo to Jules and her Sea of Bees.”
“Baenziger has a quality in her voice and her arrangements that suggests she has too much integrity to get covered in gloss.”

Garrett Pierce reports on his recent tour up north…I saw the first snow fall in Olympia. I saw the whole great state of Oregon shut down for the College Football Civil War (Ducks vs. Beavers for Rose Bowl Honors…Ducks win). I saw the inside of a small art gallery taken up by a grand piano. These are some of the memories I recall of my brief tour through the northwest. This was my forth time playing shows up there and I’ve often found myself caught in the knee-shaking, colder months. I dread it, but never forget it.

I had the honor of starting the tour off at my favorite Portland venue, The Woods, run by my comrade Ritchie of Loch Lomond. This old funeral-parlor-cum-venue is so exquisite and comfortable despite the many ghosts that have wandered through there. I opened for Portland’s own Weinland, who blew me away as usual. Those guys represent everything musical and friendly that make PDX my favorite West Coast City.

Next show was in Seattle where I played with Johanna Kunin. What a pleasure it was to hear her on a grand piano…she reminds me of Regina Spektor if she abandoned all her newest pop foibles and returned to a more pristine and truer sound. Then off to Olympia, where I shared a five band bill of tremendous songwriters and a pre-show soup cook-off that evoked the Olympian D.I.Y nature that we have all come to know and love. And that was that…just three shows and one more night of libations with my buddy Dan Glendenning (an amazing artist and poet that y’all should all discover).

For this trip I took a plane, car, train and taxi to get around - the benefit of traveling light. But I couldn’t have done it without the help of all my friends up there…you know who you are. Thank you. And thank you to Michael Leahy for previously transporting me through the NW, and for inspiring me to write this passage. I love this music thing.
